In order to celebrate the milestone of having served the 25 millionth meal, the 'Dakshina Kannada' unit of Akshaya Patra Foundation organised an event titled 'Zero to 25 Million' on Monday, November 04, 2013. The largest NGO-run mid-day meal programme in the world began its operations in this unit in the year 2005. Currently, in the Dakshina Kannada district (Mangalore), Akshaya Patra provides free mid-day meal to 25,000 students in 145 government schools.
The organisation operates through a centralised kitchen which works based on gravity-flow mechanism to ensure minimal human contact with food in order to maintain hygiene and quality. The not-for-profit foundation plans to reach out to 50,000 school children in its Dakshina Kannada unit by the year 2020.
